Whisperings from the Past - April 7
The Covington Bicentennial Committee will host the Bicentennial commemorative event “Whisperings from the Past” on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at Covington Cemetery #1, 608 N. Columbia Street.
“This cemetery event allows us to hear the voices from the past for one night. Whisperings, started over 20 years ago by former Covington City Councilwoman Pat Clanton and others, is a cemetery re-enactment where you will get to hear the stories and anecdotes of those people from Covington’s past who helped shape the city and the parish in to what they are today,” says Jan Butler, Covington Bicentennial Committee Whisperings Chair.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. with an opening ceremony. The first tour will begin at 5:45 p.m. and another tour will follow every 15 minutes, with the last tour beginning at 8:00 p.m. Each tour group will accommodate 20 people. Reservations for time slots are recommended as space is limited. To reserve a time slot, email email@example.com or call 985-892-1873. Tickets are $10 per person. Attendees will pay for and pick up their ticket at the event.
There will be five sites in the cemetery where attendees will sit for a few minutes and listen to one of Covington’s past residents speak about what Covington was like when they lived here, and about their part in the overall history of the town’s development. Some of Covington’s leading residents will participate.
Proceeds from this event will help fund the Covington Bicentennial Committee’s future events. This event is not suitable for small children, and cemetery etiquette and decorum will be followed.
If anyone would like to volunteer to be an "angel" for the evening and lead tours through the cemetery, they can call or email Sarah Chambless at 985-892-1873 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
