Historic District Commission

The City of Covington created the Covington Historic District Commission (CHDC) in 1989. The CHDC’s chief role is in stew­ardship of Covington’s historical identity through the protection of structures within the Covington Historic District.  Keeping his­toric buildings in active use encourages their preservation. As stated in the city’s historic preservation ordinance, the Covington Historic District Commission shall review applications for cer­tificate of appropriateness for proposed con­struction, material alteration, demolition, or relocation of any building, structure, or ap­purtenance in the historic district.

The role of the Covington Historic District Commission includes:

  • To advocate: The CHDC promotes part­nerships between historic preservation and schools, churches, Chamber of Com­merce, civic groups, and merchants’ asso­ciations;
  • To designate: An inventory of historic properties can be dynamic and requires regular updating as new properties be­come listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The CHDC maintains this inventory and assists property owners with the process of nominating proper­ties, as well as recommending ordinances that support the preservation of historic structures to City Council;
  • To advise: The CHDC is the official body that reviews proposals for exterior changes to properties within the Historic District and issue Certificates of Appro­priateness for approved proposals;
  • To facilitate: The CHDC assists property owners with investment tax credit appli­cations, encourages public attendance of meetings, and provides design guidelines to the public.
