Gun Fire Complaint Results in Stolen Vehicle Recovery and Weapons Charges

Chief Tim Lentz reports that on Thursday, December 26, 2013 around 7:30am the Covington Police Department received a complaint of gunshots coming from the Ozone Park Subdivision area. Responding officers quickly located a black BMW and a gold Jeep on the Ozone Ball Park field. The gold Jeep immediately fled the scene and a short pursuit ensued.

Officers on the scene detained the driver of the BMW, Birkly Sopsher. Officers determined that the BMW was stolen out of Franklinton, La and a search revealed two firearms in the trunk. Officers also located spent shell casings near the vehicle. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office crime lab graciously assisted with processing the scene.

The Jeep that fled the scene crashed during the pursuit and the driver, Rymeen Cavalier fled on foot, though officers were later able to apprehend him. A search of the jeep revealed an additional firearm.

Chief Tim Lentz says, “A quick call by an alert citizen resulted in the recovery of a stolen vehicle and getting three guns out of the hands of criminals and off our streets. It is this continued partnership with the community that keeps our town a safe place to live.”
