A career in law enforcement is both rewarding and challenging. Officers are highly trained and skilled; they must have a high degree of motivation, benevolence and understanding in order to be the officer that today’s society demands.
There are many exciting career avenues in the field of law enforcement. Initially, there is the Patrol Division, where the majority of officers gain their initial experience. However, one can also explore the realms of Investigations, Street Crimes, DARE, Narcotics, Administration, Training, School Resources, Traffic and Crime Prevention. The Covington Police Department currently fills all of these positions, among others. Additionally, the department could not function without our dispatchers and office staff who oversee the Records Division, City Court, Human Resources and Evidence.
Taking into consideration the demanding yet gratifying challenge of a law enforcement career, if you feel this is your calling, we would like to meet you. To join the Covington Police Department you must:
- Be a United States citizen
- Be a high school graduate (or have a G.E.D. or equivalent)
- Be 21 years of age
- Have a current, valid Louisiana or other state driver’s license
- Have no felonies or criminal convictions
You will also need to pass the Louisiana Civil Service test for the position you apply for, which you can take in Covington or in other locations throughout Louisiana where that test is offered. Details of this testing are also included in our response to you. If you would like to join our volunteer Police Reserve, you will also be required to go through the same application procedure.
