As a Crossing Guard, you play a vital role in ensuring the safety of our children. You will be the friendly face that helps students safely navigate busy streets on their way to and from school.
Responsibilities:
- Control traffic flow at designated school crossings.
- Protect pedestrians, especially children, from traffic hazards.
- Maintain a visible and authoritative presence.
- Build positive relationships with students, parents, and the community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
No experience or training is required.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have attained twenty-first birthday at time of appointment.
Must be a high school graduate (or have a GED or equivalent).
Required to complete a background investigation.
Must pass a drug screening.
Required to pass a physical and physical assessment.
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
Required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment.
Required to complete a Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) course or have a current POST certification.
Required to qualify annually with a firearm.
You will also need to take and pass the Louisiana Municipal Civil Service Entry Level Police Officer Exam, which you can take in Covington or other locations throughout Louisiana when offered, or at any time online.
JOB CONCEPTS:
To provide law enforcement services in support of Covington PD's mission to protect life, enforce laws, serve the public, and conduct investigations.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Performs law enforcement patrol of public streets, roads, highways, city facilities, and other locations.
Investigates/conducts law enforcement activities designed to protect life, enforce traffic and criminal law, and to provide public safety services.
Investigates criminal violations through surveillance.
May identify, contact, and develop potential confidential informants.
Identifies and apprehends suspected violators.
Investigates crime scenes and vehicle crash scenes for the purpose of gathering physical evidence and witness testimony to be used in prosecuting suspects.
Secures areas impacted by natural/manmade disasters and civil disturbances.
Coordinates the removal of injured persons and vehicles involved in crashes or other incidents.
Completes documents related to enforcement activities such as reports of investigations, inspections, written warnings, citations, affidavits, warrants/ search warrants, property receipts/releases, and paperwork that may be required by other law enforcement agencies.
Appears as a witness in court.
NOTICE:
Reserve Officer positions are volunteer roles without regular compensation. While this experience can be beneficial for future law enforcement careers, employment as a full-time police officer is not guaranteed as a result of reserve officer duties.

The Covington Police Department offers unpaid internship opportunities for motivated individuals interested in gaining experience in law enforcement. Interns will have the chance to learn about law enforcement operations and procedures while contributing to the department's mission.
Responsibilities:
- Assist with administrative tasks such as data entry, filing, and recordkeeping.
- Conduct research on various law enforcement topics as assigned.
- Observe police officers during their daily duties, including patrol, investigations, and community outreach.
- Participate in department meetings and training sessions.
- Assist with special projects as needed.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in high school or a college or university, preferably pursuing a degree in criminal justice, criminology, or a related field.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Interest in a career in law enforcement.
Note: This internship is unpaid and does not guarantee employment with the police department upon completion.

BENEFITS:
The Covington Police Department has a robust benefits package which includes:
• Starting salary of $43,672 - $45,418, depending on previous experience.
• $7,200 State Supplemental Pay, starting one year from POST Graduation.
• 100% of your retirement paid by the City. (Typically, an employee would pay 10% of their salary into retirement. At CPD, the City pays the employee’s portion, saving you hundreds of dollars each paycheck and thousands of dollars each year.)
• City-paid employee medical benefits.
• Incentive pay for a college degree, up to $2,340 annually.
• Incentive pay for medical certifications, up to an additional $2,340 per year, depending on the certification.
• Individually issued Police Units with take-home privileges.
• ALL equipment and uniforms provided to officers.
• Paid overtime opportunities are available.
• Off-duty details starting at $38 an hour are available daily.
• Specialized Divisions and Teams, including Traffic Enforcement, Special Response Team, School Resource, Narcotics Unit, Crime Prevention Unit, Criminal Investigations, and Honor Guard.
