Beware of Scammers Exploiting Free Events: Public Alert Issued

Covington, LA – May 28, 2024 – The City of Covington is issuing an urgent public alert about a recent increase in scams targeting vendors attending free community events. These scams, designed to exploit the goodwill of the City of Covington and participants, have become increasingly sophisticated.

Details of the Scams

Scammers are using the variety of tactics to deceive unsuspecting vendors. Common methods include:

  • Phishing Emails and Fake Websites: Scammers create counterfeit websites and sending phishing emails that mimic official event communications. These fake platforms often request personal information or payment details under the guise of event registration or donations.
  • Social Media Fraud: Fraudulent social media profiles and event pages are set up to spread false information and solicit money from unsuspecting followers.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Verify Authenticity: Always check the official event website and communication channels for accurate information. Avoid clicking on links from unsolicited emails or social media messages.
  • Use Secure Payment Methods: When making any transactions related to an event, use secure and traceable payment methods. Be wary of requests for payment via untraceable methods such as gift cards or wire transfers. Note that the City of Covington will never ask for payments via PayPal or Cash Apps.
  • Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter suspicious behavior or believe you have been targeted by a scam, report it immediately to event organizers and local law enforcement.

Statement from the City of Covington:
“These scammers are exploiting the generosity and trust of our community. It is essential for everyone to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves from theses deceitful practices,” said Sarada Bonnett, Director of Cultural Arts & Events. ” We are working closely with law enforcement to combat this issue and ensure the safety and enjoyment of all event participants.”
