Pedestrian Injured in Single-Vehicle Parking Lot Crash

Covington, LA – On Tuesday, December 19, 2023, shortly after 6:30 p.m., Officers with the Covington Police Department began investigating a serious injury crash involving a pedestrian that occurred within a parking lot at St. Tammany Parish Hospital.

Officers determined from the initial investigation that a 2019 Ford 14-passenger shuttle van was making a left turn inside the parking lot at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. At the same time, a pedestrian was crossing through the parking lot at a marked crosswalk. For reasons still under investigation, the Ford struck the pedestrian within the crosswalk.

The pedestrian suffered severe injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to a local hospital. The driver of the Ford was properly restrained and was not injured. Three passengers inside the Ford were also uninjured. Although impairment is not suspected, routine toxicology samples were obtained from the driver of the Ford for analysis. This crash remains under investigation.

While the cause of this crash remains under investigation, we urge all motorists to prioritize safety within parking lots, especially during the busy holiday shopping season. Safety isn’t guaranteed just by driving slowly. Stay in your lane and avoid cutting across lots. Drive slowly and use directional signals. Anticipate the actions of other drivers and pedestrians. Obey stop signs and no-parking signs. Watch for small children and parents with baby strollers.
