Winter Weather Alert

Here is the latest information for City of Covington residents regarding the Winter Weather Emergency of January 2025.

The forecast calls for extreme cold temperatures to begin impacting our city on Monday, January 20, through Thursday, January 23, with the most significant impacts coming Tuesday and Wednesday including a forecast of snowfall on Tuesday.

WARMING SHELTER:

New Orleans Mission’s Giving Hope Retreat
31294 U.S. Highway 190, Lacombe
985 218-9485 ext. 2
(If you plan to arrive after 4 pm, please call ahead)

PREPARATION:

Dangerous wind chills and hard freezes will put people, plants, pets, and pipes in jeopardy. Wrap pipes, wear layers and cover skin from the cold air, bring pets and plants indoors or prepare a warm shelter, and check on friends and family, especially the elderly.

The City of Covington reminds residents to only stream a small amount of water – about the size of a strand of spaghetti – out of the faucet furthest away from the water meter. Only do this during temperatures below 32 degrees. Once the temperature rises above 32, turn off the faucets to allow the water system to catch up.

HOME HEATING SAFETY:

Place space heaters 3-5 feet away from bedding and plug them directly into wall outlets. Never leave space heaters or candles unattended. Have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors.

Generators should be used in well-ventilated locations, outside, and at least 5 feet away from all doors, windows, and vent openings. NEVER use a generator in an attached garage, even with the door open. Make sure to install carbon monoxide (CO) detectors inside your home. Turn off generators and let them cool down before refueling. NEVER refuel a generator while it is hot.

ROAD CLOSURES:

Snowfall can potentially cause hazardous road conditions and travel impacts should be expected Tuesday, January 21 into Wednesday, January 22. Travel may become difficult, if not impossible in some areas.

Travel should be avoided at all costs beginning overnight Monday, and continuing through Tuesday and into Wednesday due to treacherous road conditions from snow and ice after it refreezes on Wednesday morning. Travel may become difficult, if not impossible in some areas.

Please understand there is no way to “predict” road closures. Roads will be monitored by emergency officials and closed as deemed necessary. NEVER drive around barricades.
