Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk: Game Plan for a Sober Super Bowl LIX

Get ready for Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9, 2025, by making a game plan for safe and sober transportation. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC), and the Covington Police Department urge everyone to prioritize responsible driving. If alcohol is part of your celebration, designate a sober driver. If you’re hosting, provide plenty of non-alcoholic beverages and food. Designated drivers are the MVPs of the night – keep that commitment!

“Super Bowl is a time for community celebration, but responsible driving is crucial,” said Chief of Police Michael Ferrell. “If you’re heading out for Super Bowl LIX, plan ahead for a designated driver. Hosts, please take care of your designated drivers. Remember, Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.”

Drunk driving can lead to devastating consequences, including serious injuries or fatalities. Help your friends, family, and fellow partygoers have a successful and safe Super Bowl Sunday.

Hosting a Winning Party:
  • Offer a variety of snacks and non-alcoholic drinks for guests and designated drivers.
  • Encourage guests to choose their designated drivers in advance.
  • Remind guests to pace themselves, eat plenty of food, and drink water.
  • Never serve alcohol to minors. Providing alcohol to underage individuals can result in liability for any resulting damage, injury, or death.
Being the DD MVP:
  • Designated drivers are the night’s MVPs. Commit to staying sober.
  • Enjoy the food, company, and non-alcoholic beverages.
  • If you see someone who has been drinking try to drive, take their keys and help them find a safe ride home.
Plan Ahead for Safe Transportation:

Don’t wait until after drinking to figure out how to get home. Impaired judgment makes it difficult to make safe decisions. Secure a designated driver, call a taxi or rideshare, or utilize a ride service app before you start drinking. If you find yourself unable to drive, hand your keys to a sober friend. If you see someone considering driving under the influence, take their keys and help them get home safely. Report suspected drunk drivers to law enforcement.

Covington PD will have additional officers on duty throughout the weekend focusing on impaired driving.
